Hard Times
In a schoolroom where children are numbered and taught that nothing counts but fact, a girl reared on the system and never allowed a story is married off to her father's friend, a mill owner who boasts of having been born in a ditch. Outside, Coketown's chimneys keep the same rhythm every day, and a weaver who will not join the union finds nothing left standing on either side of him. Dickens's shortest novel, written weekly to prop up the sales of Household Words and dedicated to Carlyle, and his most direct answer to the political economy of the decade.
