Barnaby Rudge

Charles Dickens · 1841 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Twenty-two years after an unsolved murder at the Warren, a simple-minded young man who talks mostly to his pet raven is coaxed by an agitator into the crowd gathering behind Lord George Gordon. The anti-Catholic mob burns chapels, breaks open Newgate and turns on the streets it came out of, while a Protestant father and a Catholic father go on forbidding their children to marry. Dickens's first historical novel, written in the line of Scott, and long his least read book despite holding his most sustained writing about crowds.
