The Raven

Edgar Allan Poe · 1845 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Victorian

Reading at midnight in December to forget a dead woman named Lenore, a student hears tapping and admits a raven, which perches on a bust of Pallas above his door. He questions it in mounting agitation, about balm, about heaven, about whether he will hold her again, and it answers every question with the same word. Eighteen stanzas of trochaic incantation that made Poe famous overnight and are still the most recited American verse.
