Annabel Lee
In a kingdom by the sea a speaker recalls the girl he loved when both were children, a love so complete that the winged seraphs above them envied it. A wind out of a cloud chilled her, her highborn kinsmen came and carried her away, and he insists that nothing above or under the sea can sever what the two of them had. Poe's last completed poem, printed weeks after his death and the purest surviving example of his ballad music.
