One Hundred Love Sonnets

Pablo Neruda · 1959 CE · Poem · Latin American · Contemporary

A hundred sonnets to one woman, sorted into morning, afternoon, evening and night, in which she is loved not as salt-rose or topaz but darkly, the way certain dark things are loved, between the shadow and the soul. The dedication warns her that the tradition builds sonnets of silver and crystal while these are made of wood, unrhymed and rough to the touch. Written at Isla Negra, and the most quoted love poetry in Spanish after his first book.
