The Captain's Verses
A captain who is never given a name addresses one woman through a small stock of things, bread and wine and salt and the sea, swinging between adoration, jealousy and open threats of what he would do if she left. The poems were written on Capri during a European exile the poet spent with a woman who was not his wife. Published anonymously in forty-four copies so the affair could not be traced, and unacknowledged for a decade.
