Residence on Earth

Pablo Neruda · 1935 CE · Poem · Latin American · Modernist

A man announces that he is tired of being a man, walks into a tailor's shop and a cinema, and is sickened by dentures left in a coffee pot and mirrors that ought to be weeping with shame. Everything around him drips, rots and comes apart, in work written across years of near-solitary consular postings in Rangoon, Colombo and Batavia. The great Spanish-language book of modernist dread, which Neruda later half-disowned for offering readers no way out.
