A Happy Death

Albert Camus · 1971 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

Patrice Mersault, a clerk in Algiers whose afternoons are swallowed by an office, visits an invalid who argues that poverty is what stops a man having time to be happy, and that money buys the hours back. He leaves for Prague, drifts through central Europe alone, and returns to the bay to keep house with three women above the sea. Written before 1938 and set aside, the manuscript appeared eleven years after Camus's death; its protagonist and its Algiers went into The Stranger.
