The Misunderstanding
A mother and daughter keep an inn in a landlocked country where they drug and drown the occasional prosperous lodger, saving toward a house by the sea. The son who left twenty years ago books a room without giving his name, meaning to be recognised before he explains himself. Camus built it from a newspaper item he had already used inside The Stranger, where Meursault finds the clipping under his prison mattress.
