Exile and the Kingdom
Six pieces set at the edges of the French empire and of ordinary life: a wife who climbs to a fort parapet at night in a desert oasis, a missionary who walks alone into the salt city to convert it, a schoolteacher ordered to march a prisoner across the plateau, a cooper whose shoulder gives out at forty. Each turns on someone held between banishment and a kingdom that would have to be found here rather than after. Camus's only collection, published the year he took the Nobel.
