Untouchable

Mulk Raj Anand · 1935 CE · Novel · Indian · Modernist

Bakha, a young sweeper in a north Indian cantonment town, wakes to the same round of latrines and the same rule that keeps his shadow off caste Hindus. Across one day he is struck in the street for a touch he never meant to make, finds his sister cornered by a temple priest, and hears three rival cures for what ails him. Anand wrote it in Bloomsbury and Gandhi read the draft.
