The First Man
Albert Camus · 1994 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary
Jacques Cormery, forty, finds his father's grave at Saint-Brieuc: a man killed at the Marne in 1914, when the son was under a year old, and about whom his illiterate mother in working-class Algiers can tell him almost nothing. What follows goes back to that quarter, to the grandmother's strap, the schoolmaster who put him in for the scholarship, and a poverty nobody living in it called poverty. The manuscript was in the car when Camus died in 1960.
