World's Fair

E. L. Doctorow · 1985 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A boy growing up in the Bronx in the 1930s registers his father's failing music shop, his mother's economies, his older brother's competence, and the anti-Semitic talk drifting in from the neighbourhood and the radio. He wins a place in an essay contest and is taken out to Flushing Meadows, where the Perisphere promises a planned and gleaming 1960. Interleaved with testimony from the family in their own voices, it won the National Book Award.
