Ragtime

E. L. Doctorow · 1975 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

In New Rochelle before the war a comfortable family takes in a black newborn and the woman who bore him, and the child's father, a ragtime pianist with a new Model T, begins calling at the house. When a volunteer fire company blocks the road and wrecks the car, he goes looking for redress through every channel open to a man of his colour. Doctorow threads Houdini, Emma Goldman and J. P. Morgan through that line, and took its engine from Kleist.
