Loon Lake
A mill-town boy from Paterson runs off with a travelling carnival in the Depression, and after a night that goes badly walks north through the woods until a private train passes with a lit dining car and a woman standing in it. The tracks lead to an Adirondack estate belonging to a man who owns aircraft plants, and to a resident poet who has been writing his life in verse. Doctorow cut the narration between prose, verse and personnel-file summary, the most formally restless thing he wrote.
