Eva Luna

Isabel Allende · 1987 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Born in an unnamed South American country to a servant and a gardener who dies of a snakebite, a girl is left with no inheritance except an ability to tell stories that people will feed and shelter her to hear. She is passed between employers, runs, and moves through a kitchen, a red-light street, a guerrilla camp and finally a television studio, telling as she goes, alongside an Austrian émigré cameraman with his own reasons for leaving home. Allende gives her narrator the frame of Scheherazade, and makes storytelling itself the instrument of survival rather than its ornament.
