Of Love and Shadows

Isabel Allende · 1984 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

A magazine reporter sent out to a village to write a light feature on a peasant girl said to work miracles arrives to find soldiers in the house, and afterwards the girl is not anywhere. Working with a photographer whose family has already learned what the regime does to people who ask, she keeps asking, against the advice of her fiancé, her mother and everyone else who loves her. Allende built the case on the Lonquén killings of 1973, whose discovery in a disused mine five years later gave Chileans their first physical proof of what disappearance meant.
