Daughter of Fortune

Isabel Allende · 1999 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

A foundling raised in Valparaíso by an English brother and sister falls in love with a clerk who sails for the California goldfields in 1849, and stows away after him in the hold of a ship, kept alive by a Chinese cook trained as a physician and forbidden to practise. What she finds in the camps is not the man but a country being improvised by everyone who arrived that year, and a set of clothes that lets her move through it as a boy. Allende worked from gold-rush archives, and the book opened the long historical sequence that occupied much of her later career.
