The Captain's Daughter
A young nobleman posted to a mud fort on the Orenburg steppe gives his hare-skin coat to a stranger who has walked his sledge out of a blizzard. Two years later the same man is at the head of a Cossack rising, taking the forts one by one and hanging the officers, and the commandant's daughter is inside the next one. Pushkin wrote it alongside his own archival history of the revolt, on the model of Scott.
