The Queen of Spades
An engineer of German descent who watches cards all night and never bets becomes fixated on a rumor that an old countess was given the secret of three winning cards sixty years ago in Paris. He courts her ward in order to be let into the house, and hides in the countess's bedroom on a night the household is out. Pushkin's prose tale fixed the terms the Russian fiction after it would keep using: the fixed idea, the Petersburg apartment, the fortune that arrives as a sentence.
