The Bronze Horseman

Alexander Pushkin · 1837 CE · Poem · Russian · Romantic

A clerk in Petersburg, working out how a small salary might carry a small marriage, wakes to the Neva coming up over its granite and the whole city under water. When the flood drops he goes looking for the house on the far bank where the girl and her mother lived, and ends the night standing in front of Falconet's bronze tsar, who built the capital on that marsh. Held back by the censor and printed only after Pushkin's death.
