Ruslan and Lyudmila

Alexander Pushkin · 1820 CE · Poem · Russian · Romantic

On the wedding night of the grand prince's daughter in Kiev, the bride is lifted out of the marriage bed by something nobody sees, and her father offers her hand again to whichever of four rivals brings her back. The bridegroom rides out across a plain of old bones toward a dwarf sorcerer's mountain, with a hermit's counsel and a witch's malice for company. Pushkin's first long poem, written at twenty out of Russian folk epic and Ariosto's Orlando Furioso.
