Little Tragedies

Alexander Pushkin · 1830 CE · Play · Russian · Romantic

Four pieces written in a single quarantined autumn, none longer than a few hundred lines: a miser gloating over the chests in his cellar, a composer who cannot bear a rival's ease, a seducer back from exile at the house of the woman whose husband he killed, and a table of revellers drinking in a plague-struck city. Each stops the moment the situation closes on its man. The seducer works the Don Juan legend as Pushkin had it, from Molière and from Mozart's librettist.
