Don Juan
A nobleman who has taken a wife out of a convent and left her moves from one seduction to the next with a servant who argues with him and is frightened of him. He owes money he will not pay, baits a beggar and a doctor, and late on discovers that hypocrisy is a more useful weapon than defiance. Withdrawn after fifteen performances in 1665, it appeared in print only in a censored text and was displaced on the French stage for a century by another writer's verse rewrite.
