Amphitryon (Molière)
Jupiter takes the shape of a Theban general to spend a night with the general's wife, and Mercury takes the shape of the servant to hold the door; then both originals come home from the war. The servant, beaten by himself, is the first to have to argue that he exists. A machine comedy for the court, its god who insists that a woman prefer the lover to the husband was read at once as a comment on Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan.
