The Learned Ladies

Molière · 1672 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

A household is governed by women who have given themselves to grammar, astronomy and a fashionable poet, and the daughter who wants only to marry is promised to that poet instead. Her father agrees with her and cannot bring himself to say so out loud. Molière's last five-act verse comedy returns to the target of his first Paris success, now at full length and with a literary fraud at the centre of it.
