The Braggart Soldier

Plautus · c. 205 BCE · Play · Roman · Classical

A mercenary captain who believes no woman can look at him without falling has carried an Athenian girl off to Ephesus, and her lover has followed her there, lodging next door with a hole cut through the party wall. The captain's slave, who used to be the lover's, invents a twin sister for the girl and then a rich neighbour's wife dying of passion for the soldier, so that the man might be talked into handing his prize over himself. The type fixed here, the swaggering and endlessly credulous soldier, became a standing role in European comedy, from the capitano of the commedia dell'arte to Shakespeare's Parolles.
