The Eunuch

Terence · 161 BCE · Play · Roman · Classical

Two brothers want two women in the same house: the elder sends a eunuch as a gift to the courtesan he cannot afford to keep, and the younger, having watched a girl carried in as a rival's present, takes the eunuch's clothes and place to get himself through the door. A boasting soldier and the parasite who has built a career out of agreeing with him lay siege to the same address. It earned the largest fee ever paid for a Roman comedy and was played twice in one day; Terence built it from Menander's Eunuch, with the soldier and the parasite lifted out of another Menander play.
