The Girl from Andros

Terence · 166 BCE · Play · Roman · Classical

An Athenian father announces a wedding his son cannot make, because the son is already keeping a woman from Andros who is about to bear his child, and the household's clever slave undertakes to manage both fathers at once. A funeral, a cry from an upstairs room and the arrival of a stranger off a boat put every arrangement back in doubt. Terence's first play, assembled out of two comedies by Menander, a practice rival poets attacked as spoiling good Greek work.
