The Brothers
Two elderly brothers raise two boys by opposite methods: a strict countryman keeps his own son short of money, while his indulgent bachelor brother has adopted the other and given him cash and liberty. Both young men are in trouble over women, one having carried off a music girl and the other having secretly fathered a child on a poor neighbor, and the two theories of upbringing are tested against what the sons have actually done. The most argued-over Roman comedy, written in a plain conversational Latin that made Terence the schoolroom model for European comic dialogue.
