The Fish Can Sing

Halldór Laxness · 1957 CE · Novel · Nordic · Contemporary

Alfgrimur is left as an infant at Brekkukot, a turf cottage at the edge of Reykjavik where an old fisherman sells his catch at the price he charged forty years ago and the household takes in anybody with nowhere else to sleep. Out in the world is Gardar Holm, the emigrant singer the town has decided is world-famous, who comes home at intervals and finds reasons not to perform. What the boy is after is the one pure note, and Laxness is very funny about how few people have ever heard one.
