Salka Valka

Halldór Laxness · 1932 CE · Novel · Nordic · Modernist

A woman and her eleven-year-old daughter come ashore at Oseyri, a fishing village on an Icelandic fjord, with no fare to go further, and are taken in by the Salvation Army; the mother is ruined by the man who owns the boats, and the girl grows up refusing all of it. By the time she runs the fishermen's union she is the only person on the fjord who owes nobody anything. Written after two years among American socialists, it fixed his subject for good: poverty as a system, not a misfortune.
