Independent People
After eighteen years as another man's hired hand, Bjartur buys a derelict croft on a moor said to be cursed by a heathen killer and an old witch, renames it Summerhouses, and undertakes to owe nothing to anybody for the rest of his life. Sheep, two wives and most of his children go into that principle; his daughter Asta Sollilja is the one who tests it. It was written directly against the saga ideal of the free Icelandic farmer, and it is the work most often named when the Nobel came in 1955.
