Rickshaw Boy
A country boy pulling a hired rickshaw through Beijing saves for three years to buy one of his own, having worked out that everything he wants can be reached by pulling harder and spending nothing. The city keeps taking the rickshaw back — soldiers, a plainclothes agent, a funeral. His most translated book, it appeared in the United States in 1945 in a version with a rewritten ending he had not authorised.
