Teahouse

Lao She · 1957 CE · Play · Chinese · Modernist

The Yutai teahouse in Beijing opens in 1898 with birdcages on the hooks, a notice on the wall forbidding talk of state affairs, and every class in the city drinking under one roof. Three acts return to the same room across fifty years, the proprietor older each time and the same families coming back in reduced circumstances. Written for the Beijing People's Art Theatre, it is generally taken as the finest play in modern Chinese and has never left the repertory.
