Four Generations Under One Roof
In a small courtyard off a Beijing lane an old man who has held four generations together lays in flour and coal for a siege he assumes will last a fortnight, and the occupation runs eight years. His grandsons take opposite roads, one into collaboration and one out of the city, and the neighbours sort themselves the same way. Lao She finished it in New York in 1949, and the closing chapters of the Chinese text, lost afterwards, had to be recovered from an English abridgement decades later.
