The White Guard
Kyiv in the winter of 1918, with the German garrison packing, Petlyura's peasant army closing on the suburbs and the Hetman's officers discovering that nobody intends to command them. The Turbins keep the lamp lit, the tiled stove warm and the cream-coloured blinds down while a doctor, a staff officer and a boy cadet come and go through the apartment. Bulgakov had lived that winter there as an army doctor, and set a snowstorm out of Pushkin at the head of the book.
