Sevastopol Sketches
Three dispatches out of the besieged city, written by an artillery officer serving in the bastions: the first walks a visitor through the hospital and the earthworks in the second person, the second follows a vain young officer up to the front, the third takes two brothers into the May assault. Vanity, fear and the wish to be seen behaving well are treated throughout as the ordinary materials of courage rather than its opposite. Published in the Contemporary while the siege was still running, and Tolstoy's declared hero in them is truth.
