The Kreutzer Sonata
On a night train a man acquitted of killing his wife explains to a stranger, at length and unasked, what marriage actually is and what her duets with a visiting violinist actually were. His argument runs from the marriage market to a demand for total chastity, and the carriage has nowhere to go. Banned in Russia and barred from the mails in the United States; Sofya Tolstaya petitioned the Tsar to get it released, then wrote her own reply to it.
