Father Sergius

Leo Tolstoy · 1898 CE · Short Story · Russian · Victorian

A brilliant guards officer, told on the eve of his wedding what his fiancée has been to the Tsar, leaves the world for a monastery and then for a cell cut into a cliff. Fame follows him there: pilgrims arrive expecting cures, a society woman comes on a wager to see whether a holy man can be broken, and every victory over the flesh feeds the pride he entered religion to kill. Written across the years of Tolstoy's quarrel with the Orthodox church and left unpublished in his lifetime.
