The Death of Ivan Ilyich

Leo Tolstoy · 1886 CE · Short Story · Russian · Victorian

A successful judge falls from a stepladder while hanging curtains in the apartment he has furnished exactly as a man of his position should, and the bruise in his side will not settle. His doctors talk about a floating kidney, his wife treats the illness as a slight against her, and only the peasant servant Gerasim will sit with him and say plainly what is happening. Tolstoy's late manner at its most stripped, and the standard European account of a correct life examined too late.
