Boyhood
Leo Tolstoy · 1854 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian
The family leaves the estate for Moscow, and the boy who once watched himself grieve now watches himself resent - his brother's ease, the tutor he can no longer respect, his own face in the glass. A friendship with a prince's son and a season of ostentatious philosophy fill the space where the mother used to be. The middle panel of the trilogy Tolstoy began at twenty-three, and the one where the self-observation turns cold.
