Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog

Dylan Thomas · 1940 CE · Short Story · English · Modernist

Ten pieces follow a Swansea boyhood and the years just after it — a small boy left in a field with a farm girl, a tram ride out to an uncle's smallholding, a botched camping week on the Gower, a young reporter working the pubs of the town with an older hand who knows them all. The comedy is broad and the recall is exact, and the flat conversational manner has almost nothing to do with the poems written alongside them. Thomas borrowed Joyce's title and denied in the same breath that any parody was meant by it.
