Poem in October

Dylan Thomas · 1945 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

It is the speaker's thirtieth year to heaven, and he wakes to the heron-priested shore, the harbour and the neighbour wood, and sets out over the border and out of town in rain that turns to summer as he climbs. On the hill's shoulder the weather turns again and a boy's forgotten mornings come back at him — the twice-told fields of infancy, a mother's tales, the sun that grew in a child's parables. Written at Laugharne for his own birthday, and the first of the poems he counted there as a fresh start.
