A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London

Dylan Thomas · 1946 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

The speaker will say nothing about a child burned in an air raid until the making of the world runs backwards — until darkness fathers the bird, beast and flower again and the last light breaks. He refuses to murder her going with a grave truth, or to sow his salt seed in the least valley of sackcloth, or to blaspheme down the stations of the breath with any elegy of innocence and youth. Written after the London firestorms and collected in Deaths and Entrances.
