Seeing Things

Seamus Heaney · 1991 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

The opening poem is Aeneas at the Sibyl's cave, asking to be let down among the shades to see his father once more; soon after, a boat is loaded for Inishbofin with the poet's own father aboard and the water lifting under them. A ship out of a monkish annal drops its anchor through the air and snags it on the altar rail at Clonmacnoise. Written after his father's death, the book Heaney said let the light in.
