North

Seamus Heaney · 1975 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

A girl drowned in a bog for adultery, her head shaved and the blindfold still knotted, is looked at by a speaker who admits he would have stood dumb at the roadside while women in Belfast were tarred and chained to railings. Other bodies come up out of Jutland peat, and behind them lie the longships and the Viking dead under Dublin. The book that made his reputation and drew the sharpest charge against him, that the bog gave sectarian killing too fine a frame.
