Weddings
Written in Beirut among the camps, these poems take the Palestinian funeral and stage it as a marriage, the dead man carried to his bride while the mourners are told to sing. The long central sequence follows a fighter who carries the name of a camp destroyed under siege, and the register keeps sliding from folk wedding song into an inventory of the dead. Beirut audiences learned parts of it by heart, and it fixed the martyr-as-bridegroom figure later Palestinian poetry works from.
