The Burning Plain

Juan Rulfo · 1953 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

Seventeen stories out of the Jalisco countryside after the revolution and the Cristero war: men walking a plain that will grow nothing, a father carrying his grown son through the dark, a schoolteacher warning off anyone still thinking of going up to Luvina. The speech is that of the campesinos who tell them, and nearly everything that matters is left out of the telling. Rulfo's first book, and half of an output that reset the possibilities of Latin American fiction.
