Tell Them Not to Kill Me!
Juan Rulfo · 1951 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary
An old man tied to a post in a yard begs his son to go and ask them for his life, and the son answers that speaking up would only orphan the children twice over. Forty years earlier Juvencio Nava killed a neighbour over pasture and a fence, and the officer who has him now was the dead man's boy. Rulfo moves between the two voices and the two times without marking the joins.
